Dusty Rhodes, best known as
The American Dream, was an American professional wrestler, trainer, and booker. He started as an athlete, playing baseball and football before transitioning to professional wrestling. He began wrestling in the 1960s and earned a reputation as a hardworking wrestler. Rhodes worked for the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA) and the World Wrestling Federation (WWF), which later became WWE. He is considered one of the greatest professional wrestlers of all time.
Rhodes was a three-time NWA World Heavyweight Champion, and during his time in Jim Crockett Promotions, he held the United States Heavyweight Championship. He also owned a small promotion called
Turnbuckle Championship Wrestling. In addition to winning numerous regional championships, Rhodes is one of only seven men to be inducted into each of the WCW, WWE,
Wrestling Observer Newsletter, and Professional Wrestling Hall of Fame.
Rhodes began wrestling intermittently for Vince McMahon Sr.'s World Wide Wrestling Federation (WWWF) in 1977 and maintained this association until 1983. During that period, Rhodes headlined twice at Madison Square Garden, both times challenging for the WWF Heavyweight Championship against reigning champion Superstar Billy Graham. He won the first match in September and lost the second, a Texas Death match, on October 24.
After his retirement, Rhodes occasionally appeared on WWE television and pay-per-views. In his later years, he focused on guiding and mentoring the next generation of Superstars through WWE's NXT brand.
His book,
Dusty, reflects the essence of the American Dream, as told by his peers and fans. Behind the big smile and the gate receipts is a man with a story to tell—not just about yarns and fabrications, but of a life full of dreams, success, conflict, disappointments, controversies, and challenges.
