David is a descendant of William IV through one of the king’s illegitimate children.
At one point, he visited the then-Soviet Union, where he got approached by these two Russian men that spoke fluent English. He was later told by a professor that it was certainly an attempt made by the KGB to recruit him.
After graduating, he worked for the Conservative Research Department between September of 1988 and 1993. His first brief was Trade and Industry, Energy and Privatization; and he befriended fellow young colleagues, including Edward Llewellyn, Rachel Whetstone, and Ed Valzey. They and some others formed this group they dubbed the “Smith Square set”, which got dubbed “Brat Pack” by the press, although it’s better known as the “Notting Hill set”.
