Dave Grossman

Dave Grossman was born on August 23rd, 1956 and is currently 69 years old. Dave Grossman was born in Frankfurt, West Germany.

Dave Grossman is an American author and a retired lieutenant colonel. He’s also a trainer and holds seminars on the psychology of lethal force. Upon retirement from the military, Grossman founded Killology Research Group, aimed at giving seminars on the physiological and psychological effects of using lethal force for soldiers and law enforcement officers.

Grossman's 1995 book is the study of what he termed “killology.” This odd term describes the exact circumstances involved when a person ends the life of another person. The primary focus in this case is on combat situations.

During the First and Second World Wars, it’s estimated that only 15-20% of the frontline soldiers actually fired their weapons. Evidence available also suggests that those who fired aimed their guns harmlessly above the heads of the enemy army.

Grossman has carefully researched his work and begins by filling in some historical details and discussing the stats of the shots fired per soldier killed in the world wars and the American Civil War. An average soldier during those wars was hesitant to take arms against a fellow human, even when his life was threatened. It’s not to say the soldiers were cowards, as many would risk their lives to rescue their fellows behind enemy lines.

The book also details the steps that the United States Army took to increase the percentage of soldiers who could actually fire on their enemy.

The author also spends time discussing the trauma the soldiers who kill their enemy face when they return to normal life. Grossman also discusses how painful and horrifying it is to kill and how killing is detrimental to a person’s mental health.

Most of Grossman’s work is supported by detailed interviews and psychological profiles. He digs deeper into the main subject without holding back the sensitive details that most books do. There are so many insights and quotes from interviews with vets from different wars, which makes this book one that should be compulsory for anyone interested in understanding war and its aftermath. It’s thought-provoking and intelligent as the author is uniquely placed on the subject, having been a service veteran himself and a psychology professor.
