Dale Chihuly is a glass artist and entrepreneur. He’s well known in the field of blown glass, where he moved it right into the realm of large scale sculpture.
While studying interior design at the University of Washington, he learned how to melt and fuse glass in 1961.
In 1963, Dale took this one weaving class where he incorporated glass shards into the tapestries. He got an award in 1964 for his work from the Seattle Weavers Guild.
In 1965, Dale began experimenting with glass blowing, and in 1966 got a full scholarship so he could attend the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He studied under Harvey Littleton, who’d established the very first glass program in the United States at the university.
In 1968, he got a Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation grant for his work in glass, and a Fullbright Fellowship. He went to Venice in order to work at the Venini factory, where he first saw the team approach to blowing glass.
Upon his return to the United States, he spent four straight summers teaching at the Haystack Mountain School of Crafts in Deer Isle, Maine.
Dale, along with Anne Gould Hauberg and John Hauberg, co-found the Pilchuck Glass School located close to Stanwood, Washington. He also founded the HillTop Artists program in Tacoma, Washington at Hilltop Heritage Middle School and Wilson High School.
In 1976, while he was in England, he was involved in this head on car accident which propelled him through the windshield. His face got severely cut up by glass and he was blinded in his left eye. Upon recovery, he continued blowing glass until dislocating his right shoulder while body surfing in 1979.
He was unable to hold the glassblowing pipe by 1983, so he hired others to do the work for him, liking the view better from there. It allowed him to see the work from more perspectives and anticipate problems much faster.
Chihuly Garden Installations is from the world’s greatest living artist in the medium of glass, and he’s long been fascinated with the forms and colors of nature. Through the years, his work has become more and more open, using forms which show this strong relationship to the architecture of natural shapes.
Here, some lush illustrations showcase his unique glass sculptures positioned among all the flowers, plants, and landscapes of some of the world’s finest conservatories and gardens, from Phoenix to St. Louis to Kew.
Tracing the connection between his art and botanical life, this book illustrates how the exchange between nature and art can shift from the tranquil and harmonious to stunning juxtapositions of color and scale.
