Conrad Black is a former politician, a writer, newspaper publisher, and financier.
His dad was George Montegu Black II, who had some significant holdings in Canadian manufacturing, media and retail businesses through his part-ownership of Ravelston Corporation. Conrad and his older brother Montegu, 2 years after their dad’s death, took majority control of Ravelston.
Conrad sold off most of their non-media holdings over the next 7 years in order to focus on newspaper publishing. Conrad controlled Hollinger International, which was once the world’s 3rd largest English language newspaper empire, which published
Chicago Sun Times, The Daily Telegraph,
National Post, and
The Jerusalem Post, and numerous of community papers across North America, before controversy over the sale of a few of assets the company had.
Conrad is a longtime author and columnist, and started writing a column for the
National Post ever since founding it in 1998. He’s penned numerous books, primarily in the field of American and Canadian history.
He wrote a thesis at McGill University that would form the first half of his book on Maurice Duplessis, Quebec premier. Conrad was granted access to Maurice’s papers, which were housed in Maurice’s old residence in Trois-Rivieres. He had the papers copied and then microfilmed, and donated copies to different universities.
Conrad has also hosted 2 interview shows on the VisionTV, a Canadian cable network. He belonged to the UK’s Conservative Party, however has some idiosyncratic views, which includes his support for Roosevelt’s New Deal.
Conrad bought his first newspaper in 1966, called the
Eastern Townships Advertiser in Quebec.
Richard M. Nixon: A Life in Full is about how from the late 40s to the mid-70s, Nixon was a polarizing figure in American politics, while being admired for his strategic skill, intelligence, savvy, and reviled for his cutthroat tactics and shady manner. Conrad separates the good in Nixon, some of his domestic policies, his foreign initiatives; from the sinister, in a tome that is likely to generate a good deal of controversy and attention from readers.
Conrad believes that the hounding of Nixon out of office was partly due to political retribution from a lifetime’s worth of enemies and his own misplaced loyalty to some unworthy subordinates, and not obviously the consequence of crimes that he participated in. Conrad’s own legal travails, although barely comparable, have undoubtedly provided him some unusual insight into the pressures Nixon faced in his final two years as the president and the first few years of his retirement.
