Clarence Clemons
Clarence Clemons (Clarence Anicholas Clemons Jr.) was born on January 11th, 1942. Clarence passed away June 18th, 2011 at 69 years old. Clarence Clemons was born in Norfolk County, VA, USA.
Clarence Clemons is known as The Big Man, and was saxophonist for Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band from 1972 until 2011, when he died. Clarence was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the E Street Band.
When Clarence was 9 years old, his dad gave him an alto sax as a Christmas present and got him music lessons. He’d switch to tenor sax and played in the high school jazz band.
His uncle also influenced his early musical development as he bought him his first King Curtis album. Curtis, especially his work with the Coasters, would become a major influence on Clemons and it even led to him switching to tenor sax.
When he was 18, he had a very early studio experience, recording sessions with Tyrone Ashley’s Funky Music Machine, this band from Plainfield, New Jersey, which included Billy Bass Nelson, Ray Davis, and Eddie Hazel, each of whom later played with Parliament-Funkadelics.
He also had a hit single with “You’re a Friend of Mine”, a duet with Jackson Browne. He released a number of solo records.
As a guest musician, he featured on “Freeway of Love” by Aretha Franklin. He appeared in many films, including
Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure and
New York, New York. Clarence made cameos on TV shows like
The Simpsons,
Diff’rent Strokes,
My Wife and Kids,
The Wire, and
Nash Bridges.
In
Big Man: Real Life & Tall Tales, is Clarence telling the inside story for the first time. Of his life before, during and beyond of the E-Street Band, including never-before-told and unbelievable adventures with Bruce Springsteen, the band, and an incredible cast of other famous characters recounted by himself and his best friend: Don Reo, a TV writer and producer.
There’s the truth behind the final hours of making Born to Run, the true story of how the E-Street Band got its name. How Bruce and Clarence met that stormy and dark night at the Student Prince. What happened when Ringo Starr and Clarence were sitting in a hotel room and Clarence got the call about Bruce breaking the band up. The E-Street band’s show at Sing-Sing prison where all their equipment blows out just as they take the stage. The secret Robert De Niro told Bruce and Clarence they had to keep for 25 years.
However that is just a glimpse. This isn’t your average rock book. It’s something creative. Something unique and new. It’s the story of E-Street. It’s the story of all stories. It’s the story of the Big Man.
