Christopher Darden is an American lecturer, judicial candidate, lawyer, and author. He’s worked in the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office for more than 15 years where he gained popularity as the co-prosecutor in the trial of O.J. Simpson.
He has co-authored a number of crime novels with Dick Lochte including

His book
In Contempt explores his experiences with the murder trial of O.J. Simpson. It’s one of the many books on the theme of O.J. Simpson trial which happened in November 1995.
O.J. Simpson was accused of killing his ex-wife Nicole and her friend Ron in June 1994. The case prosecutor was Marcia Clark alongside Christopher Darden as her co-counsel. Americans where shocked when Simpson was found not guilty as many believed he was guilty and wondered how the prosecution lost such a big profile case.
Darden wrote this book to share his side of the story. He explains about his childhood experiences in a working-class neighborhood in Richmond California. He also explores his close relationship with his brother Michael who died from AIDS and drug abuse. He also explains about the challenges he faced as a Black lawyer and the criticism from the Black Americans who saw him as a traitor for prosecuting a fellow Blackman.
He also takes the readers on through his experiences working alongside Marcia Clark on the high-profile case where Simpson’s defense team was regarded as “The Dream Team.”
Darden had a track record prior to this case. He had won 20 convictions of murder trials and was utterly devasted when the team lost. During the 11-month trial, Darden grew closer to the victims’ families. The case was challenging for him both inside and outside the courtroom. It was tough for him especially as a Black man prosecuting a fellow Blackman. He received death threats, hate mail and was nicknamed “Uncle Tom.”
A key moment that truly hit the prosecution was when Darden requested Simpson to try on a blood-stained glove discovered at the crime scene. The defense team also had doubts on the prosecution DNA evidence. At the time of the trial, DNA testing was still a new technology and how it was explained was too complex for the jury to fully contemplate. As there were no witnesses to the two murders, the prosecutors heavily relied on the DNA evidence to connect Simpson to the murders. The case fell apart once the defense team made the jury question the reliability of the DNA evidence.
Darden strongly believed that the prosecution had too much evidence against Simpson and losing the case was devastating. In this book, Darden expresses his frustrations with Simpson’s legal team. The trial became much bigger than just determining Simpson’s guilt or innocence - it became a reflection of celebrity, race, and power in America. Darden also explores the flaw in the United States judicial system which he believes is influence by both privilege and racism. He points out that the cops had been called to Simpson’s house nine times because Nicole feared for her life but still never warned Simpson most likely because he was a celebrity.
