I’ll be honest. I did not want to like Brookmyre. My friends kept fawning over Quite Ugly One Morning and that made me automatically dislike it. I think I saw a few minutes of the ITV show a while back. I don’t remember what I thought of it.
What brought me around was the audiobook. I don’t even like audiobooks. But this one was narrated by David Tennant and he’s awesome, so I had to give it a chance.
And you know what? My friends did not lie. It’s great. In a way, I’m lucky. From what I’ve seen on this list, Brookmyre’s bibliography has quite a few Jack Parlabane books. I don’t have to spend a year waiting for a new one to come out. Wish me a happy binge.

The character of Jack just keeps on growing on a person. Despite the crudity at times, and the rough phrases spoken in the hardcore against women in general. Of course as I am over 65, and live in South Africa, it would seem despite me being of the elderly female persuasion, the hilarity at times is nose ‘blowingly’ excellent.

My youngest grandson of 9, caught me reading, and literally crying tears of mirth in a very descriptive and gruesome retelling of a chaotic scene in the country at a Scottish castle,
Under siege and attack, those at the team building corporate exercise end up fighting with ancient swords etc in a grim kill or be killed scenario. Of course Jack and a trusty ex CIA friend are right in the middle causing mayhem left right and centre. Fowling up the best laid plans of men and beasts.

I read out parts aloud to Liam, of course heavily censoring the language, and enacting parts that were absolutely absurd and yet totally fitting. The both of us were giggling at improbable scenes of slaughter, and my grandson kept on saying it was just like a hardcore PC game.

So I also recommend it with bells and whistles on it mate!
