Cherie Currie
Cherie Currie (Cherie Ann Currie) was born on November 30th, 1969 and is currently 55 years old. Cherie Currie was born in Encino, Los Angeles, California, USA.
Cherie Currie is an artist, singer, musician, and actress. She was the lead singer for the Runaways during the mid-to-late 70s, and later became a solo artist.
At the age of 2, she and Marie were given a role on
My Three Sons. They were supposed to sing “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star” with Fred MacMurray yet froze during filming and their part wound up getting cut from the show.
Before she and her twin sister rose to fame, they had appeared on
American Bandstand as background dancers.
She joined the Runaways in 1975 when she was 15, recording 3 albums (“The Runaways”, “Queens of Noise”, and “Live in Japan”) with the band. Having signed a 4 album deal with Mercury, yet left after their 3rd album. In order to fulfill her contract, she recorded “Beauty’s Only Skin Deep” for Polygram Records as a solo album. Her twin sister, Marie Currie appears on “Love at First Sight”.
When Marie joined Cherie on a promo tour in Japan, they had the idea of recording an album together. So they recorded “Messin’ With the Boys” for Capitol Records, which was released in 1979. “Since You’ve Been Gone”, a cover of a Russ Ballard song, hit #95 on the charts.
Neon Angel: A Memoir of a Runaway is about Cherie, with her fishnets and signature Bowie haircut, and she was the groundbreaking lead singer of the Runaways, the 70s all-girl rock band. At just 15, she joined this group of talented girls: Lita Ford and Joan Jett on guitar, Jackie Fox on bass, and Sandy West on drums, who could all play rock n roll like nobody else.
Arriving on the LA music scene in 1975, they catapulted from just playing in small clubs to selling major stadiums out, headlining shows with opening acts such as Van Halen, the Ramones, Blondie, and Cheap Trick. Cherie lit the stage up with her provocative teen rebellion songs “Queens of Noise”, “Cherry Bomb”, and “Born to Be Bad”, riding a wave of hits and platinum selling albums, all as they toured around the world.
On the face of it, hers is a riveting tale about fame and girl empowerment. However it’s also the intensely personal account about her struggles with sexual abuse, drugs, and violence. She and her bandmates, runaways all of them, were thrown into a high pressure and decadent music scene where on the road, unsupervised for months at a time, they were forced to grow up fast and experience things no teenage girl should.
