Charles Barkley

Charles Barkley (Charles Wade Barkley) was born on February 20th, 1963 and is currently 62 years old. Charles Barkley was born in Leeds, Alabama, USA. Barkley attended Auburn University.

Charles Barkley made his name as a basketballer in the National Basketball Association (NBA), a TV personality, and a sports analyst. He was one of the NBA's most popular figures during his time in the league, and after retirement, he moved into sports commentating.

Even though Barkley would become one of the best players in the NBA, he was never that tall until a growth spurt made him grow 15 centimeters. During high school, he was an all-conference pick for three consecutive years. He was ultimately drafted as the fifth overall NBA pick and went to the Philadelphia 76ers.

Nearly two meters tall, Charles Barkley was a small forward but was blessed with great positional skills around the basket and could leap like the best of the best. This made him one of the best rebounders in the league, even if he never achieved much with the 76ers. Given his outspokenness, the management never liked him and he was finally traded to the Phoenix Suns in 1992.

Outside of club basketball, he won two Olympic gold medals with the United States team in 1996 and 1992. In 1996, he made the list of one of the 50 greatest players in the history of the game. A decade later, he was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame.

Following his retirement, Charles Barkley appeared in commercials and also worked as a commentator and frequent talk show guest. He was never shy about saying what was on his mind, which he combined with humor to make for a huge personality, that was even bigger than what he was when he was playing.

In 1992, Charles Barkley published the work Outrageous alongside Roy S. Johnson. He tells of his early life in Alabama his success in college and his achievements with the Philadelphia 76ers. He does not blame anyone for his failures but rather takes responsibility. Barkley asserts that athletes need to accept responsibility since opportunities for advancement are always available.

Who’s Afraid of a Large Black Man is a work that Charles Barkley published in 2005. The work features a series of interviews that he conducted with prominent Americans such as Morgan Freeman, Bill Clinton, Tiger Woods, Jesse Jackson, and George Lopez. He challenges his interviewees to speak candidly on race including adjacent topics such as social and economic discrimination, welfare reform, and race relations.
