Candice Bergen

Candice Bergen (Candice Patricia Bergen) was born on May 6th, 1946 and is currently 79 years old. Candice Bergen was born in Beverly Hills, California, USA. Bergen attended the University of Pennsylvania.

Candice Bergen is an actress best known for playing Murphy Brown for 11 seasons, a role that she won 5 Primetime Emmys and 2 Golden Globes for. She was nominated for a Best Supporting Actress Academy Award for Starting Over.

As a kid, she got irritated that she was described as “Charlie McCarthy’s little sister”, a reference to her dad’s star dummy. Candice started appearing on her dad’s radio program from a young age and in 1958, at the age of 11, was a guest with her dad on You Bet Your Life, Groucho Marx’s quiz show, as Candy Bergen. When she grew up, she said she wanted to be a clothing designer.

Candice actually started her career as a fashion model and appeared on the cover of Vogue before making her screen debut in the movie The Group, which was directed by Sidney Lumet, who knew Bergen’s family.

Playing Murphy Brown provided her the chance to show her little-seen comedic talent. It made frequent reference to political issues and politicians of the time. Although it was a conventional sitcom, the show did tackle pretty important issues. Murphy was a recovering alcoholic that become a single mom and would later battle breast cancer.

After the show ended, she was offered the chance to play journalist for real. She was approached by CBS to cover stories for 60 Minutes, but she turned them down, saying she didn’t want to blur those lines between journalist and actor.

For her work on Boston Legal, she was nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama.

Knock Wood is Candice’s bestselling 1984 memoir.

She was born into the heady Hollywood of the 1950s. Before becoming a celebrity in her own right and penned her own memoir, she wrote this one about being the “celebrity offspring” of Edgar Bergen. Her “sibling” was Charlie McCarthy, an impudent dummy beloved by millions of people. Candice, much as he loved his daughter, was a man that kept his emotions pressed and neatly hung, and was much more comfortable speaking to (and through) his brainchild. Charlie always had some answer, and couldn’t let anybody down. Above all, Charlie never was forced to leave the paradise that was childhood.

This is a book about growing up, about the comedy of expectations which ruled Candice’s young life, about the ironies which attended her exotic rites of passage. The world offered up a wealth of options to her. Wherever she went, however, she always carried the conviction that her gifts weren’t being tested, and her luck was unearned.
