Brian Cox

Brian Cox (Brian Edward Cox) was born on March 3rd, 1968 and is currently 57 years old. Brian Cox was born in Oldham, England. Cox attended the University of Manchester where he received a BSc degree and a PhD degree.

Brian Cox is a musician and physicist that is professor of particle physics in the School of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Manchester and the Royal Society Professor for Public Engagement in Science.

Brian is best known to the public as being the presenter of science programs, particularly BBC Radio 4’s the Wonders of… and The Infinite Monkey Cage.

He has been described as being the natural successor for the BBC’s scientific programming by Sir David Attenborough.

Before his academic career, he was a keyboardist for the British bands D:Ream and Dare. Dare released 2 albums with Brian, called “Out of the Silence” and “Blood From Stone”. Then he joined D:Ream, a dance act, and had several hits in the UK charts.

He’s said in a number of interviews that when he was 12, Carl Sagan’s Cosmos was a key factor in inspiring him to becoming a physicist. He has also said that he performed poorly on his maths A-level exam. That he got a D and wasn’t all that good, and found you truly need to practice.

Brian worked on the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. He held a Royal Society University Research Fellowship and a Particle Physics and Astronomy Research Council advance research fellowship.

Brian has appeared on numerous science programs for BBC TV and radio, including Einstein’s Shadow, the BBC Horizon series, as well as a voice over for the BBC’s Bitesize revision programs.

In The Quantum Universe: (And Why Anything That Can Happen, Does), Brian and Jeff Forshaw approach the world of quantum mechanics in the same way that they did in Why Does E=mc²? and make some fundamental scientific principles accessible, and fascinating, to everybody. The subatomic realm has got a reputation for weirdness, spawning any number of profound misunderstandings, journeys into Eastern mysticism, and woolly pronouncements on the interconnectedness of all things.

Jeff and Brian’s contention? There’s no need for quantum mechanics to be viewed in such a way. There’s a lot of mileage in the “weirdness” of the quantum world, and often it leads to confusion and, frankly, some bad science. This book cuts through Wu Li and asks what observations of the natural world made it necessary, how it was built, and why we’re confident that, for all of its apparent strangeness, it’s at all a good theory.

The quantum mechanics of this book provide a concrete model of nature which is comparable in its essence to Newton’s laws of motion, Einstein’s theory of relativity, and Maxwell’s theory of magnetism and electricity.
