Bret was the winner of the Cauliflower Alley Club's Iron Mike Mazurki Award in 2008 for being recognizable within and outside of professional wrestling.

In a poll conducted by CBC in 2004, Bret was ranked the 39th greatest Canadian.

He was the subject of the documentary Hitman Hart: Wrestling with Shadows, which won the Best Canadian Feature Documentary award at the Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival in 1999.
