In 2008, Johnson was elected as the second Mayor of London. He left that position in 2015 to return to Parliament. In July 2016, he became Foreign Secretary under Prime Minister Theresa May but stepped down from the role in July 2018, the same day Brexit Secretary David Davis resigned. Jeremy Hunt replaced him as Foreign Secretary.
Earlier in his career, Johnson served briefly in the Conservative Party’s leadership team under Michael Howard. He was Shadow Minister for the Arts in 2004 but lost the position after a personal scandal. When David Cameron became party leader in 2005, Johnson returned as Shadow Minister for Higher Education. In August 2014, Johnson announced he would run as the Conservative candidate for Uxbridge and South Ruislip in the 2015 general election, which he won. He did not seek re-election as London mayor in 2016, and Labour’s Sadiq Khan took over the role.

In April 2020, Johnson became seriously ill with COVID-19. Despite surviving a vote of no confidence in June 2022, pressure grew after a scandal involving MP Chris Pincher. On July 7, 2022, Johnson announced he would step down, and Liz Truss succeeded him in September.
After Truss resigned just a month later, Johnson was considered a possible replacement, but he decided not to run again.
In his book
The Churchill Factor, Boris Johnson, former Mayor of London, explores the extraordinary life and influence of Winston Churchill. Published on the 50th anniversary of Churchill’s death, the book highlights how one person’s courage, intelligence, and unique personality helped shape the modern world.
Johnson writes with energy and humor, aiming to break down both the myths and truths about Churchill. He describes Churchill as a brave leader, a brilliant speaker, a skilled planner, and a man who, despite personal struggles like depression and a speech impediment, had a deep love for his country and people.
Churchill was not only fearless in war, but he also hated violence and distrusted leaders who had never been to battle themselves. Though he played a major role in developing modern warfare strategies like aerial bombing, he was deeply aware of war's painful cost.
Aside from politics, Churchill was also a famous journalist and one of history’s greatest public speakers. He kept his depression under control by painting and continued to influence the world even as Britain’s power began to decline after World War II. His forward-thinking ideas helped shape key areas like health care, education, and social programs, even though some of his views were seen as controversial.
Above all, Johnson uses this biography to show that history is not only shaped by big events or movements but also by remarkable individuals. Churchill, with his determination and bold character, proves that one person really can change the course of history.
