Bob Brier

Bob Brier (Robert Brier) was born on December 13th, 1943 and is currently 81 years old. Bob Brier was born in The Bronx, New York, USA. Brier attended Hunter College of the City University of New York where he received a bachelor's degree and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he received a PhD in philosophy.

Robert Brier is an American Egyptologist who studies ancient diseases and mummies. He is a senior research fellow at Long Island University (LIU Post), has written books and conducted research on mummies and how they were preserved. Brier has also appeared in many documentaries on networks like Discovery Civilization, TLC, and National Geographic where he shares his knowledge about ancient Egypt. He is considered one of the leading and best experts in his field.

Brier’s book Tutankhamun and the Tomb that Changed the World explores the impact of discovering King Tutankhamun's tomb. The book is divided into three sections: the history of the tomb, revealing Tutankhamun himself and his lasting influence.

The first section covers Howard Carter’s background, the events leading to the discovery, the excavation process, and conflicts between Carter and the Egyptian government. While Carter revolutionized the way royal tombs were excavated, tensions arose over the handling of artifacts and ownership rights.

The second section discusses modern research on Tutankhamun and includes X-rays of his body, scans of the tomb searching for hidden chambers, and DNA testing that helped identify his relatives. It also highlights recent discoveries about the artifacts found in his tomb, many of which were moved and preserved for display in the new Egyptian museum.

Despite Carter’s advanced methods in documenting the excavation, the book also highlights his careless treatment of Tutankhamun’s mummy. He damaged the body to retrieve valuables and even kept or gifted some artifacts despite regulations.

The final section explores Tutankhamun’s lasting impact, particularly on Egypt’s fight against colonialism. His discovery played a key role in strengthening laws that ensure Egyptian artifacts remain in Egypt rather than belonging to foreign discoverers. This event significantly shaped modern policies on cultural heritage.

Even though a few years old, this book remains a valuable resource for understanding how the discovery of King Tut’s tomb changed archaeology and history.
