It was in 1984 that she qualified as an Episcopal priest, and she would serve in different roles in ministry before she was appointed rector of the Clarkesville, Georgia-based
Grace Calvary Episcopal Church. Two years later, she was recognized as one of the most effective speakers in the English world by
Baylor University.
Thereafter, Barbara Taylor Brown moved from parish ministry and moved to Demorest, Georgia, where she served as Butman Professor of Philosophy and Religion in the faculty of
Piedmont College. She has also worked at the Columbia Theological Seminary as an adjunct professor.
During her time as a professor, she focused her teaching on world religions and encouraged her students to study diverse faith traditions to get a better understanding of spirituality on a global scale. In 2014, she was named on
Time Magazine's list of the 100 most influential people in the world.

Barbara Brown announced her entry into writing with the work
Mixed Blessing, which she published in 1986. This is a collection of sermons, in which she provides her perspectives and wisdom to bible readings from the lectionary cycle. The themes range from conversations with Moses and Abraham to the modern communion of saints to how to recognize genuine miracles.
About a decade later, Brown published
Home By Another Way, a Christmas story following the three wise men as they went on the journey to Bethlehem. In this retelling, the author tells of the power of a unique star and offers new perspectives on the encounters the three wise men have with the likes of baby Jesus, King Herod, Joseph, and Mary.
Barbara Brown Taylor has also published a nonfiction work,
Ministry and Mission. This is a compilation of essays that address several themes of practical ministry and pastoral theology, such as the church’s mission in modern society, theological education, and the nature of ministry.
