Augusten Burroughs

Augusten Burroughs (Christopher Richter Robison) was born on October 23rd, 1965 and is currently 59 years old. Augusten Burroughs was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA. Burroughs attended Holyoke Community College.

Augusten Burroughs, born Christopher Richter Robison on October 23, 1965, is an American author best known for his New York Times bestselling memoir Running with Scissors (2002).

Burroughs’ novel Sellevision centers on a group of individuals connected to Sellevision, his satirical take on a home shopping television network.

Max finds himself unemployed after an unfortunate on-air mishap involving unintended full-frontal nudity. Now, he’s scrambling to land his next gig.

Peggy Jean, the picture-perfect suburban mom with polished hair, devout faith, and three well-behaved kids, begins to crack when mysterious, menacing messages and packages start arriving. Her carefully curated life unravels, and she soon turns to vodka and Valium just to hold things together.

Bebe Friedman is on a quest for love. Pushing forty, she posts a personal ad online despite her friends calling her crazy. But against the odds (and maybe a little common sense), she meets a man who’s everything she hoped for—warm, witty, and head-over-heels-worthy.

Although Burroughs includes a half-dozen other narratives, these are the primary ones. John, Peggy Jean's husband, is obsessed with the neighbor’s daughter and child pornography. Leigh is waiting for the married CEO of Sellevision to leave his family so she can pursue a relationship with him. Trish’s extremely wealthy father makes her hardworking fiancé feel painfully inadequate, as if he will never be able to measure up.

Max, a gay man now searching for work, is portrayed as intelligent and humorous. He shares a close friendship with Leigh, and despite the personal challenges they face, the two support each other over Chinese food and make plans to turn their lives around. Both Max and Leigh are given strong, engaging storylines with moments of humor and ultimately uplifting conclusions.

Bebe Friedman is depicted as warm, humorous, and emotionally open. Her developing relationship with Eliot, whom she meets online, is both sweet and heartfelt. Their connection is unique and leaves a lasting, positive impression.

Peggy Jean’s storyline is one of the more serious and emotional arcs in the novel. She is portrayed as a sheltered, conservative suburban woman who often focuses on the wrong things in life. Despite her flaws, Burroughs treats her with empathy rather than judgment. The story is told from her point of view, which helps readers understand her decisions—even when they’re misguided. Through hardship, Peggy Jean experiences real pain but also meaningful growth, becoming more self-aware and resilient.

Burroughs is a sharp, humorous author with a simple yet direct writing style. His cynical view of the world doesn’t come across as depressing because he consistently keeps humor in focus, even when addressing serious or tragic situations.
