Armando Galarraga
Armando Galarraga (Armando Antonio Galarraga Barreto) was born in Cumaná, Venezuela.
Armando Galarraga is best known as a former professional baseball pitcher from Venezuela who played in Major League Baseball in the United States, in addition to several other leagues.
His first stint as a pro was in 1998, which is when he signed with the Montreal Expos. Armando would then work his way through the minor leagues until he finally reached the pinnacle of his career playing in the MLB.
His debut in the MLB was in 2007 with the Texas Rangers, where he pitched a scoreless inning. He would then turn out for the Houston Astros, Arizona Diamondbacks, and Detroit Tigers. Over his career in the MLB, he played in 100 games with a very respectable win-loss record of 26-34.
Galarraga became known for a 2010 game he played for the Tigers. After retiring the first 26 batters, he had a ground ball called at first base determined to be safe, and thus, he was robbed of a chance of having a perfect game.
Following his time in the MLB, he moved on to other leagues. He has played for the Mexico-based Pericos de Puebla and the Chinatrust Brothers in Taiwan before he hung up his boots in December 2015.
While he has since retired from the sport, Armando Galarraga has remained involved. He now runs an Austin-based baseball academy where he mentors and trains young players. Armando often shares his experiences from both international and major league playing days.
In 2011, Armando Galarraga published his book titled
Nobody’s Perfect, in which he chronicles how he achieved one of only twenty perfect games in baseball history.
In June 2010, he pitched what was supposed to be a twenty-first, but a missed call by Jim Joyce, a veteran umpire, stopped him from making history. While it was a mistake, Galarraga did not argue and finished the game.
In this book, Armando tells the shared story of himself and Joyce the umpire as he reflects on their careers, the all-important game, and the lasting moment of sportsmanship, grace, and honesty.
