Andrew S. Grove (Gróf András István) was born on September 2nd, 1936. Andrew passed away March 21st, 2016 at 79 years old. Andrew S. Grove was born in Budapest, Hungary.

Andrew S. Grove was better known as an entrepreneur behind the massive success of Intel, the company that manufactures semiconductor computer chips. He was president of the company for nearly two decades before he became CEO for a decade and chairman for eight years.

When the Soviet Union put down the Hungarian Revolution of 1956, he first moved to Austria before settling in the United States.

After studying in the United States, Andrew S. Grove was hired by Fairchild Semiconductor Corporation, where he worked as a researcher. He would then rise through the ranks, working under Gordon E. Moore, becoming an assistant head of development and research.

In 1968, Robert Noyce and his boss, Gordon Moore, teamed up to found Intel. In 1971, Intel launched the first microprocessor in history, and a few years later, in 1978, its 8088 microchip was installed in the first personal computer made by IBM.

Two decades later, Intel's stranglehold on the PC chip market was at 85 percent as its chips were found in just about every PC. Andrew S. Grove received much of the plaudits for the success of Intel.

Andrew S. Grove would also become one of the most respected managers in tech, known for encouraging constructive confrontation in the workplace.

In 1997, Time Magazine named Grove “Man of the Year”. Eight years later, in 2005, he stepped down from the board at Intel but retained an advisory role.

In 1983, Andrew S. Grove published High Output Management to explain how managers can enhance employee productivity by focusing on teams instead of individual output.

According to Grove, management is more of a production system where decisions, people, and processes are organized to enhance outcomes. He also believes that managers should focus on high-leverage activities such as effective meetings, clear decision-making, and employee training.

He suggests that managers set clear objectives and measure performance with indicators through frameworks such as Key Results and Objectives. Grove asserts that good management is all about guiding people, designing systems, and removing bottlenecks to make teams more effective.

Five years later, Andrew S. Grove explained how companies can stay on top of major developments in the industry in the work Only the Paranoid Survive.

He introduces the concept of strategic inflection points, which he asserts are times when market forces, technology, and competition shift, forcing a company to rethink its strategic direction.

Grove draws on his time at Intel to show why it is critical to recognize changes, communicate clearly, and be willing to change strategy, as decisive leadership, adaptability, and constant vigilance can help a company succeed and survive in dynamic marketplaces.

In 2001, Andrew S. Grove published a memoir of his life titled Swimming Across.

It all began in Budapest, Hungary, where he was born into a Jewish family. His early years were marked by rabid antisemitism, which was then followed by an occupation by the Nazis before the Communists took over after World War II.

When the Hungarian Revolution was crushed, he fled to the United States, where he completed his studies in chemistry and physics. He gives an account of his escape and the years he spent as a student at City College of New York.
