Andrew Grant knows how to play with words to create fantastic thriller novels. The Run was an intelligent thriller that kept me turning pages. It tells a story of a computer consultant who got fired and when his wife leaves, his world becomes a mess. I kept guessing the person who was behind everything that was happening and each time I got it wrong. In Detective Cooper Devereaux series, I liked Cooper for being the kind of detective that slightly bends the rules to get the job done. When he is given the job to find a missing 7-year old boy, he stops at nothing until he complete the assignment. Grant’s stories hook me from the start to the end, and the suspense makes the story more interesting.
I do not envy Andrew Grant. People won’t stop comparing his work to Lee Child’s books. When we heard that Lee Child wanted to leave the Reacher novels in his brother’s hands, my friends and I decided to give Grant’s novels a read.
We hoped that his books would give us an idea of what we could expect once Grant took control of the Reacher series. Most of us wanted to hate David Trevellyan because he sounded like a Jack Reacher rip-off.
But you know what? Trevellyan is more than capable of standing on his own. Yes, he’s an army vet. Also, the character is ruthless, just like Reacher. That being said, Trevellyan is a distinct character with a unique set of attributes.
I commend Grant. He could have attempted to avoid the comparisons with his brother by writing novels in an entirely different genre. But instead, he decided to dip his toes into the action-thriller genre. It shows a lot of confidence.
I just learned that Andrew Child who has joined with Lee Child on the Jack Reacher series has also written books as Andrew Grant. I was excited to read those as I have read all the Reacher books and it will be awhile before another one hits the market. The first one, Even, disappointed me but it might have been me instead of the book. I had a lot going on and read it in bits and pieces while also listening to audio books because I was busy doing other things that prevented me from just sitting with a book to read. I am going to give it another try (or two) with additional books on the list.
I’m a fan of his co-authored with Lee Child books although I know many aren’t.
I read the first two novels in the David Trevellyan series by him many years ago. I actually rated Even 10/10 as I thought it was excellent. However I gave Die Twice a 2/10 and haven’t read anything by him since (other than the Reacher books). That one it just felt like he went too overboard with the Trevellyan character – it was like Reacher if Reacher was Clark Kent, and Trevellyan was Superman.
