Andre Agassi

Andre Agassi (Andre Kirk Agassi) was born on April 29th, 1970 and is currently 54 years old. Andre Agassi was born in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Andre Agassi is an American former world No. 1 tennis player. He is an Olympic gold medalist, an eight-time major champion, and a runner-up in seven other majors. He is the second of five men during the Open Era to achieve the Career Grand Slam. Additionally, he is the first man to complete both the Career Super Slam and the Career Golden Slam, which he accomplished in 1999.

At the age of 13, Andre was sent to Nick Bollettieri’s Tennis Academy in Florida. Originally, he was only meant to stay there for three months, as that was all his father could afford. However, after watching Andre for half an hour, Nick, deeply impressed by his talent, called Andre's father and told him to keep his money because his son could stay for free. Andre subsequently dropped out of the ninth grade to pursue a full-time tennis career.

At 16, Andre turned pro and competed in his first tournament in La Quinta, California. He won his first match against John Austin but then lost to Mats Wilander.

While still a teenager, he reached the semifinals of both the US Open and the French Open in 1988, and in 1989, he made the US Open semifinals again.

At the 1990 US Open, his opponent in the final was Pete Sampras. Just a year prior, Andre had crushed Pete, after which he told his coach that he felt bad for Pete since he would never make it as a pro. However, he lost the US Open final to Sampras in just three sets. The Agassi-Sampras rivalry would go on to become one of the biggest in all of tennis for the rest of the decade.

In 1994, under new coach Brad Gilbert, he began employing a much more tactical and consistent approach, which fueled his resurgence. He started slowly that year, losing in the first week at the French Open and Wimbledon, but emerged during the hard-court season, winning the Canadian Open. Agassi’s comeback culminated at the 1994 US Open with a victory against Michael Chang. He defeated five seeded players along the way and became the first man to capture the US Open as an unseeded player, beating Michael Stich in the final.

Open: An Autobiography is much more than just a superb memoir about the highest levels of pro tennis; it’s also the engrossing tale of a remarkable life.

Andre had his whole life mapped out for him before he even left his crib. He was groomed to be a tennis champion by his demanding and moody father. By the age of 22, he had won the first of his eight Grand Slams, achieving celebrity, wealth, and the game’s top honors.

He reveals that he was often confused and unhappy, not fulfilled by his great achievements in a sport he had come to resent.
