In her 2o17 book
Janesville, Amy Goldstein chronicles what happened to Janesville, a small town in Wisconsin, when the General Motors assembly plant, which employed many people in town, was shut down during the 2008 financial crisis.
Amy Goldstein spent years interviewing victims of the shutdown in the small town. She tells of the many challenges that families, autoworkers, politicians, educators, local leaders, and job trainers had to confront in the face of a changing economy, shrinking wages, and job loss.
He shows how hard it was for families and workers to find something else to anchor their lives on after losing their jobs at the plant, and why this is, more often than not, impossible.
