Alan Ball

Alan Ball (Alan Erwin Ball) was born on May 13th, 1957 and is currently 68 years old. Alan Ball was born in Marietta, Georgia, USA. Ball attended Florida State University where he received a theatre arts degree. He also attended the University of Georgia.

Alan Ball is an Academy Award, Emmy, and Golden Globe winning writer and director best known for his work on the HBO series Six Feet Under and the film American Beauty.

He graduated in 1980 from Florida State University with a degree in theater arts. After finishing college, he started working as a playwright at the General Nonsense Theater Company in Sarasota, Florida.

He broke into television as a story editor and writer on Cybill and Grace Under Fire.

His Buddhist faith has influenced his filmmaking. Like in the plastic bag scene in American Beauty. He had an encounter with a plastic bag once, and he didn’t have a video camera the way Ricky does. There is this Buddhist notion of the miraculous inside of the mundane, and he believes that we live in this culture which encourages us to not look for that.

Prior to his success with American Beauty, he had two scripts in development hell. He has written two more films, one of which, called Uncle Frank, he also produced and directed, and the other was Towelhead.

Alan is a gay man and he has been called a strong voice for the LGBT community. He made Out magazine’s annual list of the 100 most impressive gay women and men.

American Beauty: the Shooting Script takes place on your run of the mill suburban street in an average suburban town, there’s an ordinary family that lives the American dream. Just look closer. Carolyn, Lester Burnham’s wife, regards him with contempt, while Jane, his daughter, believes he’s a loser, and his boss positions him for the ax.

Captivated by Angela, Jane’s sultry high school friend, Lester decides to make just a few changes in his meager existence. Changes which are less mid-life crisis than a life reclaimed. The more free that he gets, the happier he becomes, which is that much more maddening to both his daughter and his wife. Complicating things further, Lester finds an unexpected ally in the teen son, named Ricky, of the new neighbors living just next door. The son sees life through a camera lens which has been focused on Jane Burnham lately.

In pursuit of Lester’s new vision of the American dream, he will soon learn that ultimate freedom comes by paying the ultimate price.
