Alan Alda
Alan Alda (Alphonso Joseph D\'Abruzzo) was born on January 28th, 1936 and is currently 89 years old. Alan Alda was born in New York City, New York, USA. Alda attended Fordham University where he received a BA degree.
Alan Alda is an American actor who has been nominated for three Tony Awards, six Emmy Awards, and won a Golden Globe. He was also nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Owen Brewster in Martin Scorsese’s
The Aviator. Alda is the only person to ever win Emmys for writing, directing, and acting.
Alan is best known for his portrayal of Captain Benjamin Franklin “Hawkeye” Pierce on
MASH**, a show for which he also wrote and directed numerous episodes.
The series began as a typical service comedy, like
McHale’s Navy, but it turned into a more serious show once the original writers left. Driven by Alda, the show evolved, and by the concluding seasons, Alda had become both a creative consultant and producer. While it retained its comedic foundation, it took on a much more serious tone, openly addressing social and political issues.
Alda was a member of the ROTC and later entered the United States Army Reserve, serving for 6 months at Fort Benning. Despite erroneous reports on military sites that he served in Korea, Alda has repeatedly clarified that he didn’t serve there. Instead, after active duty at Fort Benning, he spent time in the reserves in New York City. He has joked that he was just in charge of a mess tent.
His daughters and wife lived in New Jersey, and Alda did not want to move his family to Los Angeles, initially because he wasn’t sure how long the show would last. For all 11 years that MASH* was on the air, Alda commuted from Los Angeles back to his home in New Jersey every weekend.
Never Have Your Dog Stuffed: And Other Things I’ve Learned is Alda’s memoir, released in 2006. The book is just as funny, elegant, and affecting as some of his best performances.
The son of a popular actor and a loving yet mentally ill mother, Alda spent his childhood backstage in the comic and erotic world of burlesque. After some early struggles, he went on to achieve extraordinary success in his own profession.
However, this book is not just a memoir of show-business ups and downs. It’s also a funny and moving tale about a boy who grew into a man, realizing that he’s just started to grow. The story is filled with turning points in his life, events that shaped him into the person he is today—if he could just survive them.
If I Understood You, Would I Have This Look on My Face?: My Adventures in the Art and Science of Relating and Communicating is a guide to better communication, based on Alda’s own experiences with improv, acting, storytelling, and science.
The beloved actor shares powerful and fascinating lessons from the science of communication. He teaches readers to improve the way they relate to others using storytelling, improv games, and their own innate mind-reading abilities. With his trademark frankness and humor, Alda explains what makes these out-of-the-box techniques, which he developed after years of hosting
Scientific American Frontiers, so effective.
The book reveals what it truly means to be a true communicator and offers insights into how we can communicate better in every aspect of our lives—with our lovers, friends, families, doctors, in business settings, and beyond.
