Abu Bakr al Rabeeah

Abu Bakr al Rabeeah is a Canadian writer, whose memoir was published in 2018.

He is originally from Iraq, and in 2010 moved with his family to Homs, Syria in order to escape from persecution because of their status as minority Sunni Muslims, however soon became forced to move once again because of the outbreak of Syrian Civil War. They moved to Edmonton, Alberta in 2014.

Winnie Yeung was his English as a second language teacher at the time he started considering writing his memoirs, and she co-wrote his book with him.

Homes: A Refugee Story tells the story about how in 2010, the al Rabeeah family left from their Iraq home seeking a safer life. They made it to Homs, Syria right before the Syrian Civil War began.

Abu Bakr, one of eight kids, was just 10 years old when the violence started on the streets all around him: attacks on his school and mosque, car bombings, firebombings late at night. This tells about the odd juxtapositions of growing up in this war zone: unimaginable and horrific events that were punctuated by normalcy: friends, soccer, cousins, and video games.

Here is the remarkable true story about a young boy emerged out of a war zone, and found safety in Canada with this passion for sharing his story and telling the entire world what is actually going on in Syria. As told to her by Abu Bakr himself, writer Winnie Yeung has crafted this hopeful, heartbreaking, and urgently necessary read which provides a window into better understanding Syria.
