Empire of the Sun is perhaps the best known novel based on J.G. Ballard's work. The book was turned into the 1987 film by Steven Spielberg. The film starred a young Christian Bale as Jim Graham, John Malkovich as Basie, Miranda Richardson as Mrs. Victor, Nigel Havers as Doctor Rawlin, and Masat? Ibu as Sergeant Nagata. The movie also featured a young Ben Stiller in one of his first ever on screen roles. It was well received upon its release and won awards from the National Board of Review of Motion Pictures for Best Film and Best Director. It also earned numerous Academy Award nominations, but did not win any. Ballard's Crash was turned into a film in 1996 by director David Cronenberg. The film was very controversial upon its release, as was the book, and it received mixed reactions from critics. However, it is enjoyed by Cronenberg fans and has developed a bit of a cult following in the years since its release. Ted Turner refused to release the film through his U.S. distributor Fine Line Features. The film was also booed at the Cannes Film Festival, but it did end up winning a special Jury Prize. High-Rise was made into a film of the same name in 2015. Despite being written in the 1970s, director Ben Wheatley felt that it made as much sense in 2015 as it did then. The film starred Tom Hiddleston as Robert Laing, Jeremy Irons as Anthony Royal, and Sienna Miller as Charlotte Melville. The film was a critical success and was even nominated for the Empire Award for Best British Film. It did not do very well at the box office though. Low-Flying Aircraft iis a 2002 Portuguese fi;m based on a short story by Ballard with the same name.

I love Ballard’s work and have read 3 of his novels so far. I find a lot of his work is very prescient and those are some of my favorite types of books.
