Danielle Steel has long been a favorite author for the way she tells a story and the way that she brings her characters to life.
The character Bernie Fine, from the novel Fine Things, is such a sensitive, and loving male that stepped up to the plate when it was needed.
Another fantastic read from Danielle Steel is Palomino. It’s a rather harrowing tale from the perspective of one of the primary protagonists.
A third novel worth mentioning is Zoya. It is an enjoyable read with some Russian history and a time period which are excellent subjects to read about.
Danielle Steel has always been one of my favorite authors and I have read pretty much all of her novels ever since I stumbled upon Family Album in 2010.
What I like about Steel is that she is never afraid of writing about the less savory aspects of human nature including war, incest, divorce and suicide.
Over time, I feel that her writing has been evolving. In recent times her heroines tend to be more authoritative and stronger that move on to new love interests if they do not receive the attention and respect they desire from their man.
Steel has also changed a lot when it comes to her plots as she takes more risks. Reading Ransom I felt that there was much more focus on suspense rather than romance as it tells the story of three characters who at first seem unconnected but slowly their lives begin to intersect.
In Toxic Bachelors, Steel tells her story from the perspectives of three characters which is a huge deviation from her usual style.
While she has changed her style a lot, I find that her novels have become better and more engaging over time.
In her first novel, Going Home, Danielle Steel’s main focus is on family issues and human relationships Her novels mostly involve characters in crises that threaten their relationship. I felt that Ransom was more of suspense than romance story of three unconnected characters whose lives start to cross paths. Safe Harbor is a book that will make you cry then laugh the next minute. Honestly, I wasn’t expecting to enjoy the book as much as I did. I had a chance to watch some movie adaptations, such as The Promise, Once in a Lifetime, and Safe Harbour, and I found them thrilling.
I don’t think people give Steel the credit she deserves. They know she’s a prolific romance author. But they don’t realize that she’s sold more novels than any other living author.
Think about it. We praise Rowling for her success because her books have sold 500 million copies thus far. But Steel’s sales stand at a whopping 800 million copies.
Some people will push back and argue that Rowling’s sales are attributed to a dozen or so books, whereas Steel had to write an estimated 190 books to attain her current status. But that argument only goes to highlight Steel’s genius.
Anyone that has ever written fiction knows how difficult writing can be. And yet, Danielle Steel has written 190 books. That is an incredible feat. This woman deserves all the praise the world can give her.
I started reading Danielle Steels books back in the late 80’s with The Ring & Palomino. Those books lead me to read Ms. Steel’s novels for decades ending in 2021. Her books repeat the same thought over and over again said in different words. Her stories should become short stories. The wording has become boring and since my reading time is valuable, I have found other authors who keep my interest in a story. When I wish a story to be finished is when I know an author has not fulfilled my expectations. So sorry to say I am saying goodbye to Ms. Steels books. 🙁
I love your books: I decided I wanted to become an author after reading some of your books. It has been fun collecting your books for 30 years.I now have three books of poetry on Amazon.
Danielle Steel has become a mass producer of novels. The bulk of her stories are very predictable. She also is extremely wordy and overly descriptive. I find myself skimming her books just to get through them at times.
I have read and love everything that DS has penned. In the past five years though, her writing has changed and I have really enjoyed the style and content of her writing!!
Star was the first book I’ve read from Danielle Steel. Love the story and this made her one of my early favorites.
