Dennis Lehane is among the few contemporary authors I know and one of my favorite. He impressed me with Mystic River Novel and Kenzie & Gennaro mystery series, and I really admire how he writes. In Kenzi & Gennaro, Lehane’s writing is on a high notch than most detective series I’ve read. The story paired grit and humor with a polished, emotive quality that we often see in other similar novels. ‘Since We Fell’ was a compelling story of a lady unveiling secrets about her father and the news stories she covers. Lehane does a superb job in creating fantastic characters who add flesh to the stories. Dennis Lehane’s storytelling skills are on another level, and once he begins a book in thriller mode, be ready to go on a roller coaster ride. Rachel Childs in ‘Since We Fell’ novel was my overall favorite character, and I loved how she was so real. He incorporates twists and turns that keeps me guessing and leaves me surprised at the end.
I don’t know how I went so many years without realizing that Dennis Lehane wrote the books that inspired some of my favorite movies. This is the problem with Hollywood. They can’t be bothered to promote the fact that their films came from books. Or maybe they told us, and I just forgot.
I read some reviews which suggested that my knowledge of the movies would keep me from enjoying the novels. But they were wrong. I can watch the same film twice and enjoy it even more, the second time.
Reading Shutter Island and Mystic River was no different from watching those movies a second time. And for the most part, they did not disappoint. No, I wasn’t blown away by the twist in Shutter Island because I knew it was coming. Nonetheless, I had fun.
Dennis Lehane might be the best crime novelist today. There is a reason the movies based on his books are award winning. His books tell of a dark underworld in Boston that make me fear ever visiting there. As a author goes, Dennis does not feel the need to over describe or beat a dead horse. He comes in dangerous and fast and bludgeons the reader with the cold hard facts. Most authors want to write The Great American novel, Dennis already has multiple times and will probably do so again.
