William Dummer Powell

William Dummer Powell was a Loyalist lawyer, political figure, and judge in Upper Canada.
William studied in Boston before he got sent off to England under the care of Sir Alexander Grant, his maternal relative, who sent him to board at Tonbridge School. He excelled at nothing other than cricket in his four years there, and was sent to live with a merchant at Rotterdam where he was supposed to learn Dutch and French as he gained first hand experience in business.
As a Loyalist, he went to Quebec in 1779, entering into private practice in Montreal. In 1783, he went to England to petition with some other delegates against the Quebec Act. William’s formal call to the English bar, delayed because of finances, was arranged finally in 1784 and, later that same year, he returned back to Boston to try and recover his dad’s property which was confiscated after the American Revolution. He went back to Montreal in 1785, after not being successful.
He was appointed judge in the Western District in 1789. William lived in Detroit, however the court sat at L’Assomption (Windsor). Then in 1794, he got appointed to the Court of King’s Bench for Upper Canada and moved to Newark (Niagra-on-the-Lake).
In 1808, William got appointed to the Executive Council for the province. He settled at York and stayed there during the American occupation during the War of 1812. William was opposed to the suspension of habeas corpus during the war.
In 1814, he aided Chief Justice Thomas Scott by presiding over numerous of the trials known as the “Bloody Assize” which were held at Ancaster to prosecute those that were charged with treason during the war.
The Settlement of Upper Canada (Ontario): A Loyalist Settler’s Account is a description of how the province of Upper Canada was founded. It was a British colony in what’s now the province of Ontario.
Upper Canada was founded by the British back in the late 18th century as a result of the influx of American Loyalist refugees coming from the United States. During the American Revolutionary War, some of the colonists in the British-ruled American colonies sided with Great Britain against the American rebels. The pro-British Anglo-American colonists were known as Loyalists.
In 1781, British forces suffered this catastrophic defeat at Yorktown, at the hands of an American-French force. It was a defeat that paved the way for Great Britain to negotiate peace and recognize American independence. As a result of the British defeat, the Americans that sided with Britain became forced out of their homes. The British government sought to provide some new homes for the American Loyalists in their remaining colonies. Some of the Loyalists went to the British West Indian colonies, like the Bahamas. Many others, however, went up north, into what’s now Canada, which was still ruled by Britain.
