Wes Craven was an American filmmaker known for directing, writing, and producing movies mainly in the horror genre. He became famous for his creative use of classic horror elements combined with humor, especially in slasher films. Many consider him a leading figure in horror filmmaking.
Throughout his career, Craven earned several awards, including the Scream Award, Fangoria Chainsaw Award, and honors from the Sitges Film Festival. He was also nominated for a Saturn Award. In 1995, he received the Life Career Award from the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films. Later, in 2012, the New York City Horror Film Festival gave him a Lifetime Achievement Award for his contributions to the genre.
Fountain Society is Wes Craven’s first novel, and while it's not a game-changer in the biomedical thriller genre, it does offer a clever premise and some surprising plot twists that keep things interesting. The story follows Dr. Peter Jance, a brilliant physicist in his seventies who’s racing against time and terminal cancer to complete a powerful new weapon for the U.S. military. When it looks like he won’t survive long enough to finish the job, a secret group of scientists and military officials steps in with a wild plan: transfer Jance’s brain into the body of a much younger man.
That man just happens to be Hans Brinkman, a healthy Swiss banker who’s kidnapped and killed for his DNA. After the experimental brain transplant, Jance wakes up in Brinkman’s youthful body, but things don’t go as smoothly as planned. Jance's new life brings unexpected emotional complications, especially when he crosses paths with Elizabeth, a model who was involved with Brinkman. Their sudden romance and the story’s dramatic turn on a Caribbean island add a mix of action, confusion, and slightly over-the-top drama.
Craven doesn’t seem to take himself too seriously here, which actually works in the book’s favor. The story barrels along toward a twisty but foreseeable ending. It’s a literary masterpiece. If you're into sci-fi thrillers with a dash of mad science and identity crises, this one might be worth a weekend read though honestly, it feels more like it was written with a movie in mind.
