Vincent Bugliosi
Vincent Bugliosi (Vincent T. Bugliosi Jr.) was born on August 18th, 1934. Vincent passed away June 6th, 2015 at 80 years old. Vincent Bugliosi was born in Hibbing, MN, USA. Bugliosi attended the University of Miami where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree.
Vincent Bugliosi was a prosecutor and author that served as Deputy District Attorney for the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office between 1964 and 1972. Vincent became best known for successfully prosecuting Charles Manson and the other defendants that were accused of the Tate-LaBianca murders.
During his time in the DA’s office, he successfully prosecuted 105 out of 106 felony jury trials, which included 21 murder convictions.
He left the District Attorney’s office in 1972, and started a private practice, which included defense cases for criminal trials. Vincent twice ran for the DA’s office, however didn’t get elected.
In private practice, he successfully represented three criminal defendants, getting acquittals all three times. Stephanie Steams was probably his most famous client, whom he successfully defended when she was on trial for murder of Eleanor Graham on Palmyra Atoll, a South Pacific Island.
As a writer, he never owned a computer and at one time did all of his research through library microfilm archives. During his later year, he relied on Rosemary Newton, his virtual secretary, to help him out with such tasks. He also wrote his books out by end entirely, with Newton later transcribing his long-hand texts.
Helter Skelter: The True Story of the Manson Murders is the number one true crime bestseller of all time, with 7 million copies having been sold.
In LA during the summer of ‘69, this series of brutal and seemingly random murders captured headlines across America. An heiress to a coffee fortune, a famous actress (and her unborn child), a supermarket owner and his wife were among these 7 victims. One thin trail of circumstances eventually linked the Tate-LaBianca murders to Manson, this would-be pop singer of small talent that lived out in the desert with his “family” of devoted young men and women. What was his hold over them? And what was the motivation behind this savagery? In the public imagination, over time, this case assumed the proportions of myth. These murders marked the 60s end and became an immediate symbol of the dark underside of such an era.
Vincent prosecuted this case and here is his enthralling account of how he built his case from what a defense attorney dismissed as merely two fingerprints and Vincent Bugliosi. Not only is this a spellbinding murder case and courtroom drama but also a social document of rare importance.
This book won an Edgar Award from the Mystery Writers of America for the Best True Crime Book of the Year.
