Victoria Thompson inspired me to write fiction. I read an interview where she said that she started writing at a time when training opportunities for creative writers were scarce. So, she taught herself to write by reading hundreds of books.
I was hesitant to follow my publishing dreams because I don’t have any of those writing and language degrees you see in the biographies of famous authors. But reading Thompson’s interview gave me the courage to give writing a go despite my limitations.
I was already in awe of her Gaslight mystery series. Now I cannot wait to deliver the same exciting puzzles and attention to detail that I have come to expect from Thompson’s work. Though, part of me worries that I will recreate her style in my stories because I’ve read so many of her novels.
The last thing you want to receive as a new writer is accusations of plagiarism. Then again, I have an editor friend that loves Thompson as much as I do. I can trust her to keep me on the right track.
I have enjoyed the Counterfeit Lady series .. until the most recent City of Betrayal. While I understand getting the vote for women was an important event that happened in the era of the series, this book did not have the fun of the scams found in the other stories. I found it boring and only a discussion of the sordid and nastiness of politics. I would not recommend this book. Hopefully any further book will revert to the earlier type.
