Tony Blair is a British politician who served as the British Prime minister for a decade between 1997 and 2007. He became known for the role he played in the
Iraq War and in international politics.
He was a barrister before he vied for the Sedgefield parliamentary seat which he won in 1983 under the
Labour Party. Blair was known to identify with party modernizers. This group was interested in making the party more acceptable to voters by distancing itself from high taxation, trade unions, public ownership, and unilateral nuclear disarmament.
In 1994, Tony Blair took leadership of the
Labour Party following the death of John Smith, the then-leader. He became the unquestioned leader of the party and led it to a landslide victory in the general election of 1997. He also made history as the youngest prime minister of the UK ever since Lord Liverpool.
Blair promoted a modern and youthful image of Britain, whose symbolism was the
Millennium Dome,
BritArt, and
BritPop. He was also a radical policymaker who undertook many constitutional reforms a gave a measure of independence to Scotland and Wales.
In 2001, Tony Blair got reelected though his second term was marred with disagreements with Chancellor Gordon Brown, a former ally. He risked everything in 2002-2003 when he teamed up with the Americans to support the
War on Terror, which the British public and many in his party did not support.
Upon reelection in 2005, he made history as the only
Labour premier to have a third consecutive term.
In 2010, Tony Blair published his memoir
A Journey: My Political Life. The work chronicles his life and work as a politician starting from leading the
Labour Party to a historic victory. From the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and his work in Northern Ireland, this is a glimpse into his fascinating journey and what it means to have great power, and the personal and emotional toll that it comes with.
