Tommy Chong
Tommy Chong (Thomas B. Kin Chong) was born on May 24th, 1938 and is currently 87 years old. Tommy Chong was born in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.
Tommy Chong is an actor, comedian, activist, and musician. Tommy’s best known for his inspiration/role in the marijuana industry, marijuana themed Cheech & Chong comedy albums and the movies he made with Cheech Marin, and playing Leo on
That 70’s Show.
He dropped out of high school at 16, right before they were just going to throw him out anyway. He wound up making money playing guitar. He learned that music could get you laid, even if you were just a long-haired, scrawny, geeky looking guy like him.
Tommy performed and co-wrote on numerous Cheech & Chong albums, four of which were Grammy Award nominated for Best Comedy Album. He and Cheech shared the 1973 award for Los Cochinos. Tommy directed four of their 7 movies, while starring and co-writing all of them with Cheech.
Even though they were a successful comedy act, they split up in 1985 because of creative differences and Cheech’s desire to focus on a more mainstream acting career. Which started a tough time for Tommy. He worked on
The Martinez Family, an unsold pilot for CBS, which was reworked into
Trial and Error.
Tommy also starred, wrote and directed
Far Out Man. Cheech cameos as a passenger.
He wouldn’t act regularly until filling a recurring (and later regular) role as Leo an aging and fun loving hippie on
That 70’s Show.
The I Chong: Meditations from the Joint is Tommy’s memoir. Tommy is a beloved stoner comedian, and he’s wiser, older, and officially an ex-con.
The US Drug Enforcement Administration’s agents launched a sting called Operation Pipe Dreams and forced their way into Tommy’s California home, with their automatic weapons drawn on the morning of February 24, 2003. As a result of the raid done on his home; the ransacking of his son’s company, Chong Glass, and the Bush administration’s determination to make an example of the “Pope of Pot”, he got sentenced to 9 months in prison since his company shipped bongs to this head shop in Pennsylvania which was a front for the DEA.
Now it’s Tommy’s turn to fight back and tell his side of this story.
Starting with Tommy’s experiences growing up in Canada in the 40s and 50s as a mixed-race child going on to become a comedy legend, this is a memoir, a spiritual exploration of his time spent in prison, and a political indictment of the eroding civil liberties in post-9/11 American society. Tommy tells the unbelievable story about his trip down the rabbit hole of America’s war on drugs and his experience in the federal prison system, and he also offers up some timely observations on combating the conservative political forces that are at work in this country.
