The Leftovers was adapted into a television series for HBO by Perrotta and Damon Lindelof. The first season followed the book very closely, but the series continued for two more seaons in which it took the story into new areas not found in the book.

Tom Perrotta returned to HBO with a series based on his book Mrs. Fletcher. The series starred Kathryn Hahn as Eve Fletcher, Jackson White as Brendan Fletcher, and Domenick Lombardozzi as George. The show was well received by critics, but did not air past the first season and its initial seven episodes.
Election was the first of Perrotta's books to be adapted into a film. The 1999 film was directed by Alexander Payne with a screenplay written by Payne and Jim Taylor.
