Terry Goodkind has written many novels over the course of his nearly three decade career even if I just started reading his novels last year.
Having read several reviews online I decided to start with Wizards First Rule which is phenomenal novel.
It comes with unremitting action and development, thoughtful and original aspects and a lucid and interesting narrative which I believe are the core components of a good fantasy or science fiction work. Even though this is his first novel it clearly showed that he could go on to become one of the greats in the genre.
In Stone of Tears another of my favorites in the Sword of Truth series Goodkind once again delivers a story full of adventure. The characters that he introduced in the first novel make a comeback and are just as admirable. Kahlan Amnell and Richard Cipher projected such strength in character even if they have their imperfections.
I place Wizard’s First Rule within the same category as classics like Lord of the Rings and Narnia. I discovered Tolkien and Lewis during my teens. But I must have been seven years old when I read Wizard’s First Rule for the first time. It shaped my understanding of fantasy, introducing concepts that expanded my imagination.
Terry is a little controversial because he rejected attempts to classify him as a fantasy author. However, I don’t think anyone agrees with his assessment. The man was a fantasy author—end of story. And regardless of his opinion on the genre, he was pretty good at his job.
