They decided to get Tariq out of Pakistan and off to England, where he studied Philosophy, Politics, and Economics at Exeter College, Oxford.
While at Oxford, he became a member of the Oxford University Humanist Group, a place he found that discussions and debates were much stimulating than those conducted inside of the careerist confines of the Labour Club. In 1965, Tariq got elected President of the Oxford Union.
In 1967, he was one of 64 prominent figures (which includes the Beatles) that signed this petition that called for marijuana to be legalized.
His tenure at the Union including meeting with Malcolm X during which Malcolm expressed this deep consternation about his own risk of being assassinated in December 1964.
Tariq’s public image started growing during the Vietnam War, as he engaged in debates against the war with figures like Michael Stewart and Henry Kissinger. He also testified at the Russell Tribunal over US involvement in Vietnam.
Tariq was also a vigorous opponent of American relations with Pakistan which tended to back military dictatorships rather than democracy.
You Can’t Please All: Memoirs 1980-2024 is a new memoir from renowned political activist and author.
Tariq recounts a life that is committed to cultural interventions and writing. An eyewitness in Moscow to the Soviet Union’s fall, he was caught up in the intellectual excitement which had gripped the country. Hugo Chavez invited him to visit Caracas, and the two developed a striking friendship.
Post-2001. As one of the founding members of the Stop the War Coalition, he became a rather fierce critic of the War on Terror, visiting numerous American cities with surprising regularity to engage in discussion and debate, which inaugurated this new phase of political activism. Evident in his work is the integral part that politics play in his life. He’s one of the most sought-after socialist and anti-imperialist public intellectuals on most continents.
Underlying this narrative is this chain of jottings, anecdotes, reflections, and storytelling. The book explores his work for film and theater, along with the man’s fiction, which includes the acclaimed
Islam Quintet.
