Stephen had several offers for the film rights and eventually accepted the offer made by Mr. Mudd Productions as long as they let him write and direct the film. The film was shot in the Cincinnati and Pittsburgh Metropolitan Area and scenes from the movie includes places like the Fort Pitt Tunnel, Fort Pitt Bridge on Interstate 376 and on Mount Washington. While Stephen Chbosky directed and wrote the screenplay for the film it was produced by Lianne Halfon, Russell Smith, and John Malkovich. The film includes several famous actors and actresses such as Emma Watson, Paul Rudd, Nina Dobrev, Dylan McDermott, and Joan Cusack and many more. The film also received several accolades, including the Independent Spirit Award for Best First Feature, two Critics' Choice Movie Awards nominations, and the GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Film – Wide Release and that's just a start. Stephen also re-wrote Evan Spiliotopoulos's original script for the 2017 live action reboot of Disney's Beauty and the Beast. He directed the 2017 film Wonder, and co-wrote with Jack Thorne, and Steve Conrad and was based on the novel of the same name by R.J. Palacio.
