Stan and Jan Berenstain
Stan and Jan Berenstain were American illustrators and writers best known for creating
The Berenstain Bears.
Stan and Jan met their first day of art school in 1941 at the Philadelphia Museum School of Industrial Art.
Stan served as a medical illustrator in the Army as a medical illustrator during World War II while Jan worked as a draft artist for the Army Corps of Engineers along with working in an aircraft factory.
They said that a major reason behind the inspiration for the
Bears books was the difficulties that parents would face, and some of the childhood tribulations when they were children themselves. The couple also noted that there’s issues that pop up in every generation like kids throwing tantrums in public, which made for important subject matter for their stories.
Having been inspired by their kids’ enthusiasm for Dr. Seuss’ books, Jan and Stan decided to try writing a series with animal protagonists. They settled on bears, not due to their surname as is commonly believed, instead because they found bears to be appealing and furry.
Besides writing their popular book series, they were successful cartoonists with several adult humor magazine and book credits under their belts. They produced the magazine cartoon feature
It’s All in the Family from 1956 until 1989 in
Good Housekeeping and
McCall’s.
Their signature series starring the titular Berenstain Bears premiered with
Big Honey Hunt in 1962. The Bear family has just run out of honey, and Father Bear and Small Bear get sent out to track down more. However rather than just buy some at the store, like Mother Bear said, Father decides to follow a bee around and get some right from the source.
Their inspiration, Theodor Geisel worked as an editor in the kids’ division of Random House Publishing and he eagerly approved of this concept. He went on to edit several of the Bears books.
They followed up
Big Honey Hunt with Bears’ Picnic. The Berenstain Bears set out to find the perfect spot to have a picnic, Father Bear claims he knows the perfect spot. However every ideal location winds up being a total disaster, with either hordes of mosquitoes or a train roaring past. They finally find a great spot without noisy planes, pesky crowds, and zero mosquitoes. Then it begins raining.
Then they took readers on a fun filled journey to the beach in
The Bears’ Vacation. Either the Bears go snorkeling, sailing, swimming, surfing, and have a run-in with this angry whale, so Father Bear definitely knows how to find trouble.
