Simon Baron-Cohen is a clinical psychologist and professor of developmental psychopathology at the University of Cambridge.
He formulated the mindblindness theory of autism, the evidence for which he collated and published in 1995. Simon formulated the prenatal sex steroid theory of autism in 1997, the key test of which he published in 2015. Then Simon 2003, he worked on formulating the empathizing-systemizing theory of autism and typical sex differences, which he published the key test in 2018.
Simon has been working in autism research since 1982. In order to explain the social-communication difficulties in autism, he and colleagues Alan Leslie and Uta Frith formulated this theory of mind hypothesis. It’s the brain’s partially innate mechanism for quickly making sense of social behavior by effortlessly attributing mental states to others, which enables social communication and behavioral prediction.
They were able to confirm this using the false belief test, illustrating that your typical four year old child is able to infer another person’s belief which is different to their own, but autistic kids are delayed in this ability.
He was given the McAndless Award from the American Psychological Association, the Spearman Medal from the BPS in 1990, a 1993 May Davidson Award for Clinical Psychology from the BPS, and the 2006 Presidents’ Award from the BPS.
Pattern Seekers looks to answer whether or not inventing things is unique to humans. Simon argues that it is, and proposes that autistic people have played a crucial role in human progress for 70,000 to 100,000 years, from the first musical instrument to the first complex tools like the bow and arrow all the way to the digital revolution.
Simon presents the science that the same genes which contribute to autism enable this special sort of pattern seeking which is essential to our species’ inventiveness. But these abilities come at a price for autistic people, including neurological and social challenges.
Simon calls upon us to celebrate and support autistic people in their talents and their disabilities. But ultimately the book is not just a new theory of human evolution but this call to reconsider just how society treats those of us that think differently.
In
Science of Evil, Simon draws on his years of research to unveil this simple yet persuasive hypothesis for a whole new way to think about evil.
How can we possibly explain kindness and cruelty? To Simon, the explanation for kindness is high levels of empathy and the explanation for cruelty is low levels of empathy.
In this book, he draws on years of research in order to develop this brain-based new theory of human kindness and cruelty. He explores the biological and social factors which can influence our empathy levels, explaining the key distinction between affective and cognitive forms of empathy, and illustrates just how low empathy can lead to dehumanizing behavior. This book continues to challenge our comprehension of human cruelty.
