Seth Godin

Seth Godin was born on July 10th, 1960 and is currently 65 years old.

Seth Godin is an entrepreneur, speaker, and writer who has been shaping how people think about learning, leadership, and marketing for several decades. He first became known for starting and growing unconventional ideas before they were widely understood or popular.

He founded the small book packaging company Seth Godin Productions early on, demonstrating his belief in building something from nothing and taking risks.

Seth Godin would then become the founder of Yoyodyne, the interactive marketing company that went against the grain by focusing on engagement, trust, and permission rather than trust, thus changing online marketing forever.

At the core of Yoyodyne’s strategy were interactions, contests, and games that strengthened customer connections. It was ultimately sold to Yahoo, with Godin following along to become the man in charge of Direct Marketing. Under his leadership, his division would become the benchmark for early digital marketing practices.

After leaving Yahoo, Seth Godin founded Squidoo to help people share knowledge and ideas about topics they cared about. The website would become one of the most popular sites on the internet before it was sold.

Godin then founded the intensive, online workshop-focused program altMBA, focused on creative problem-solving, teamwork, and leadership. The program would then evolve into the Akimbo company that provides modern education.

He is also a podcaster at the Akimbo Podcast and founded the global volunteer project The Carbon Almanac, which provides information about climate change in a range of languages.

In 2000, Seth Godin published Unleashing the Ideavirus, in which he shows how ideas spread more effectively from person to person than from the company straight to the client. According to Godin, this is what he calls an ideavirus, in which he advocates creating ideas worthy of sharing. He shows how companies such as Volkswagen, PayPal, GeoCities, and Hotmail accomplished this by making sharing exciting and easy. Seth also explains the components of a shareable idea, including low friction, influential people, clear paths, and groups. He argues that most businesses can achieve explosive growth by having ideas that spread naturally in a noisy, crowded world.

In his next work, titled Tribes, Seth Godin writes about community and leadership. For him, a tribe is all about people linked to each other, a leader, or a shared idea. He believes everyone has leadership in them and that it is not only managers or bosses who can lead, since leaders simply inspire and connect people towards achieving a purpose. Seth explains how the Internet has made forming tribes incredibly easy and how it is important for leaders to be passionate, clear, and brave if they hope to bring people together. He also shows that the best leaders go against convention and help people come together to work as a team.

In 2011, Seth Godin published the book We Are All Weird, in which he asserts that being different is a strength rather than a problem. He believes that the old mass-market systems pushed for uniformity, fitting everyone into small boxes. While this was effective once, it is a significant limitation on creativity and choice. In a world with more options and independence, he believes that respecting differences and offering more choice is the best way to let people survive and thrive.
