I was a young teen when I read my first Sarah Dessen novel. I couldn’t stand it. It felt like the author was pandering to me. As an adult in their mid-20s, I spend more time reading Dessen than any other author.

I don’t get it. I read ‘Lock and Key’ a few years ago, and it just spoke to me. ‘That Summer’ did the same. For reasons I cannot quite describe, it wasn’t as melodramatic as I remembered.

Or maybe, as a young adult, I can finally see the truths that initially flew over my head as a teenager. Or maybe Dessen writes for all ages, and I was just too dumb to appreciate her style all those years ago.

I’ve read so many books by Sarah Dessen, and she has never disappointed me in any of her work. She is an iconic contemporary YA author, and I like how she writes stories about family showing that there is no perfect family.
In The Rest of the Story novel, she shows the character’s flaws and insecurities while demonstrating struggles with friends, family, and life at large. I know her for writing solid Young Adult novels that can also be ideal foR adults.
I liked how in Someone Like you, Dessen doesn’t make Scarlett’s pregnancy look perfect; instead, she shows how she struggled until she was due, just like some mothers experience.
Scarlett was my favorite character, and I admired how she dealt with the pregnancy until it was due.
