Russell Braddon was primarily known as an Australian author of TV scripts, biographies, and novels. His most famous work is
The Naked Island, a memoir of his experiences as a prisoner of war which became a bestseller selling more than a million copies.
During World War II, Braddon enlisted in the Australian Army and was sent to the Malays. He was then held prisoner by the Japanese in Changi and Pudu prisons between 1942 and 1945. During the time he was a POW, he met Ronaldo Searle who helped to illustrate his seminal work.
In 1949, he emigrated to England after he suffered a series of mental issues that almost caused him to commit suicide. According to his doctors, his mental problems came from his experiences as a prisoner of war. Subsequently, they urged him to take some time off to find himself.
Russell Braddon would then publish his debut novel in 1952. He has also produced many other works including newspaper articles, novels, TV scripts, histories, and biographies. Russell also appeared frequently on British television and radio as a broadcaster.
Bradon died in the New South Wales suburb of Urunga where he had made his home after returning from England in 1993.

The Naked Island. The work tells of the author’s experiences as a prisoner of war in a Japanese camp for more than four years.
Braddon chronicles the criminality of the Japanese including the killing and starving of thousands of Allied Prisoners of War. However, despite everything, Braddon describes how he remained human despite going through long periods plagued with disease and hunger.
