I had an interesting introduction to Cook. I remember reading ‘Outbreak’ and not caring for it, not because it was poorly written, but because Cook was essentially repeating ideas I had seen a million times elsewhere. I couldn’t finish the book.

The same thing happened with ‘Toxin.’ It wasn’t until I borrowed ‘Contagion’ that I finally solved the problem. ‘Outbreak’ was published in 1987, yet I was reading it in 2019.

Cook was not relying on overused tropes. More than likely, when he first published ‘Outbreak,’ his ideas were new and fresh. Once I took note of the year of publication, I started to enjoy Cook’s work.

From the looks of this list, the author is still writing fiction. I cannot wait to track the changes to his stories that must have occurred over the decades.

The king of the medical thriller. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed a handful of Cook’s novels. I need to get back to them. It’s interesting to see how the medical mystery is presented. Remember however that some of these novels are 40 or 50 years old.
