The novel The Appaloosa by Robert was adapted to a movie in 1966. DIrected by Sidney J. Furie, the adaptation was written by James Bridges and Roland Kibbee. It shared the same name, although in some markets it was titled Southwest to Sonora. It also starred John Saxon, who listed it as his favourite movie that he was in.

The movie received the Bronze Wrangler award for outstanding Western motion picture by the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum.
