Robert M. Edsel

Robert M. Edsel (Robert Morse Edsel) was born on December 28th, 1956 and is currently 69 years old. Robert M. Edsel was born in Oak Park, Illinois, USA.

Robert M. Edsel is known for writing in the Non-Fiction genre.

Robert M. Edsel is a #1 New York Times bestseller of non-fiction books, one of which was adapted by George Clooney, which was The Monuments Men. Robert co-produced The Rape of Europa, a documentary film.

During the late 90s, he started thinking about the planning and methods used to keep art out of Hitler’s hands and Nazi Germany. In 2000, he initiated a serious effort to learn more about this issue to understand it better.

These efforts became a full-time career by 2004, and he established a research office in Dallas, his hometown. The following year, he’d gathered thousands of photos and other documents and started writing Rescuing Da Vinci, which was published the following year.

He’s been honored with the Texas Medal of the Arts, the Hope for Humanity Award (presented to him by the Dallas Holocaust Museum), the President’s Call to Service Award, and the Foundation for the National Archives’ Records of Achievement Award.

In 2022, the U. S. Army and the Smithsonian Institution made Robert an honorary graduate of the first Army Monuments Officer Training Program, which is an idea Robert advocated for almost 20 years. He is also the Chairman and Founder of the Monuments Men and Women Foundation, a recipient of the National Humanities Medal, awarded to him by President George W. Bush.

Remember Us: American Sacrifice, Dutch Freedom, and A Forever Promise Forged in World War II starts during the pre-dawn hours of Hitler’s invasion of Western Europe on May 10, 1940, when his forces rolled right into the small rural province of Limburg in the Netherlands shattering more than a century of peace. Their freedom gone, the Dutch lived through 4 and a half years of occupation up until American forces hit Limburg in September of 1944, the final portion of Western Europe being liberated by the Allies before their advance on Nazi Germany came to a halt.

Just like The Monuments Men, this book is an ensemble piece that follows 12 main characters over six years, zeroing in on ordinary people.

Drawing on previously unseen diaries, letters, and other historical records, Robert reveals the painful price that comes with freedom, both on the battlefields and within American homes. In a dramatic, rich, and suspenseful tale, he captures both the transcendent power of gratitude and the horrors of war, illustrating the extraordinary measures the Dutch have taken to express their gratitude to their liberators. This is precisely the book we need, a reminder that grief’s universal, that humanity knows no racial or national boundaries, and that we all want to be remembered, someway, somehow, by someone.
