I vaguely remember hearing Harris’ name on Desert Island Discs. I don’t know whether I listened to the program or if someone simply told me about it. Anyway, talk of Harris always brings Fatherland to mind.
Fatherland is one of those books that scared the heck out of me during my teens. The book takes readers to an alternate history where Germany won the war. The story was chilling because you know that those events could have easily happened.
It makes you appreciate life in the 21st Century. Things are not perfect, obviously. But let’s be honest, life under Hitler would have been so much worse.
Robert Harris is my favorite contemporary author. I’ve read seven of his books. For six of those books, I gave a 10-stars rating (the other book, Good and Faithful Servant, received 4 stars).
Harris is a *GENIUS* of historical fiction and non-fiction.
