Rita Coolidge is a recording artist that during the 70s and 80s, her songs were on
Billboard magazine’s country, pop, adult contemporary, and jazz charts. She won 2 Grammys with Kris Kristofferson, her then-husband and fellow musician. Rita did the theme song for
Octopussy in 1983, which was called “All Time High”.
After singing around Memphis, which includes a stint where she sang jingles, she got discovered by Delaney & Bonnie, who worked with Rita in LA. There she became a backup singer for artists like Harry Chapin, Joe Cocker, Leon Russell, Jimi Hendrix, and Bob Dylan.
She met Kris Kristofferson in 1970 at the LA airport when they were both catching the same flight to Tennessee. Rather than continue on to his intended destination of Nashville, he got off in Memphis with her. They married in 1973, had a kid in 1974, and recorded numerous duet albums, which sold well.
She was in a movie with him, called
Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid, that was directed by Sam Peckinpah.
Rita’s biggest success on the pop charts came during 1977-78 with four straight top 25 hits, remakes of “We’re All Alone”, “Higher and Higher”, “You”, and “The Way You Do The Things You Do”.
Delta Lady is Rita baring heart and soul in an intimate memoir, a tale of stardom, music, family, heritage, love, and resilience.
Rita sang backup for Joe Cocker, Stills, Eric Clapton before she found fame as a solo artist with hits like “(Your Love Has Lifted Me) Higher and Higher” and “We’re All Alone”. She cowrote songs like “Layla” (the piano coda) and “Superstar”. Rita also inspired Leon Russell’s “Delta Lady” and “A Song For You”, while Stephen Stills penned “Cherokee”.
Following her story from Lafayette, Tennessee, to becoming one of the most sought-after rock singers in LA during the 70s, this book charts her fascinating journey throughout the 60s and 70s pop/rock universe. She was a muse to some of the 20th century’s most influential rock musicians, she broke up bands and broke hearts. Her relationship with Jim Gordon (a drummer) took a rather violent turn during the legendary 1970 Mad Dogs & Englishmen tour. David Crosby maintains that her triangle Stills and Graham Nash was the last straw for the band. Her volatile marriage to Kris Kristofferson yielded 2 Grammys, a daughter, and one of the baby boom generation’s epic love stories.
Through all of it, her resilience, strength, and outer and inner beauty, along with her strong sense of heritage and devotion to her family, helped her to not just survive but also thrive.
