Richard Blanco
Richard Blanco (Ricardo Blanco) was born on February 15th, 1968 and is currently 58 years old. Richard Blanco was born in Madrid, Spain. Blanco attended Florida International University where he received a degree in civil engineering.
Richard Blanco is a civil engineer and poet from the United States who made his name when he was named the inaugural poet for President Obama’s second inauguration. He made history as the youngest, gay, immigrant and Latinx person named the inaugural poet.
Blanco has won numerous awards and gongs including a
Woodrow Wilson Fellowship and a
National Humanities Medal awarded by President Biden. He has served as the poet laureate of Miami Dade County and was the first Ambassador for the
Academy of America.
As for his literary pursuits, he is better known for his poetry which showcases universal themes of belonging and place and how he negotiates cultural identity. One of his memoirs has also been optioned and is due to be developed into a TV series.
Richard Blanco has co-written plays, one of which was performed at the
Portland Stage. He has also been a co-lyricist for a musical titled
Waiting for Snow in Havana. Blanco has also written poems for organizations and events such as the
Boston Strong Benefit Concert and the
Tech Awards of Silicon Valley.
Nationally, and on the global stage, Blanco has lent his voice and his art as an advocate for arts education, diversity, immigration rights, and LGBTQ rights. Regardless of the hat he wears, he has been known to write illuminating stories that shine a light on the human spirit.
Richard published his memoir,
The Prince of Los Cocuyos, in 2014. In this work, the author explores his coming-of-age story as a Cuban immigrant. He also documents his struggles to find his place in America even as he deals with his sexual identity and burgeoning artistic talent. Navigating two worlds that are the nostalgic world of his parents Cuba and his childhood in America, he questions his cultural identity.
In 1998, Richard Blanco published his debut poetry collection,
City of a Hundred Fires. The works showcase several cultural coming-of-age experiences of Cuban Americans. These are bilingual exiles born of Cuban parents who are caught between the present and real America, where they live and grew up, and the nostalgia of Cuba which their parents call home.
