Ralph Waldo Emerson
Ralph Waldo Emerson was born on May 25th, 1803. Ralph passed away April 27th, 1882 at 78 years old. Ralph Waldo Emerson was born in Boston, Massachusetts, USA. Emerson attended Harvard University.
Ralph Waldo Emerson was a distinguished thinker, lecturer, and author who was one of the most influential figures in 19th-century literature and philosophy.
Early in his life, he was employed at his brother’s school as a teacher, even as he wrote poetry pieces. Following the death of Ellen Tucker, his first wife, he experienced a crisis of faith, quit his work in Christian ministry, and focused more on public speaking and writing.
In 1832, Emerson went to Europe, where he met some of the most influential figures in literature, such as William Wordsworth, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, and Thomas Carlyle. His encounters would sharpen his interest in philosophy and spirituality.
When he returned to the United States, he moved to Concord, Massachusetts, and made friends with thinkers and writers such as Bronson Alcott, Margaret Fuller, and Henry David Thoreau. Together, they would become the founders of the Transcendentalist movement.
Ralph Waldo Emerson’s lectures and essays called for a deep connection between the natural world, divinity, and humanity, even as he called for intuition and self-reliance. He encouraged his audience to come up with their own voices instead of an overemphasis on European traditions.
During the 1840s, he worked for The Dial magazine as a coeditor, during which he spread Transcendentalist ideas. He combined social concerns with a focus on individuality, as he spoke out on several causes, including the abolition of slavery.
While his health declined as he aged, Emerson continued to publish and became known as the
Sage of Concord. He died in 1882, having influenced a generation of writers from Walt Whitman to Henry Thoreau.
In his nonfiction work
Napoleon: Man of the World, Ralph Waldo Emerson shows the former French leader as the ultimate man of the world as opposed to just a brilliant man of war.
He was a man who stood out as he was a reflection of the faults, strengths, and hopes of ordinary people. Napoleon embodied the ambitions and language of everyday folk, even as he balanced deep thinking with action and valued both individual freedom and power.
Emerson shows how Napoleon would come to symbolize the ultimate man of his age, as he was felt and understood by the masses, even as he became a conqueror.
Yet again in 1905, Ralph Waldo Emerson writes about Plato in the work
Plato: The Philosopher and New Readings.
He believed Plato was a fundamental cog of philosophy who had timeless ideas. Plato did not just describe the world, but through his mind, he made it into art.
He also looked at the soul like a map of nature, and his thinking was so clear that it has become a fundamental way of how modern humans understand the human mind, nature, and knowledge.
